HOW DO BERKEY FILTERS WORK?

Berkey water filters purify water using 4 simple and effective methods. The beauty of Berkey filters is that they do not require power or energy of any kind. The only power required is gravity.

MICROFILTRATION

Berkey purification elements are made of a proprietary combination of more than 6 different media types which are constructed to form an extremely compact microscopic porous matrix containing millions of micropores.

They create a 'tortuous path' that prevents bacteria, cysts, parasites, herbicides, pesticides, organic solvents, VOC's, detergents, cloudiness, silt, sediment and sedimentary minerals, foul tastes and odors from passing through.

This process, known as microfiltration, prevents pollutants from passing through, purifying the water.

ADSORPTION & ABSORPTION

The Berkey filter media formulation uses adsorption and absorption properties to further the filtration process. Adsorption creates an ionic barrier similar to surface tension that allows the micropores to prevents the passage of contaminants which are smaller than the pores via surface tension properties. This allows for the removal of extremely tiny submicron viruses without the use of chemicals like iodine and chlorine.

Heavy metal ions like chromium, copper, lead, mercury, aluminum and others are removed via ion exchange process where they are attracted to and transformed by electrical bonding to the media.

FLOW RATE

Because Berkey filters do not require power or any external pressure to force water through a medium (Reverse Osmosis filtration), there is a longer contact time between the water and the microporous matrix within the filters. This makes the Berkey filtration system extremely effective at removing contaminants and pollutants.

Water molecules are therefore in contact with the filter for a long period of time compared to fractions of seconds as with other powered filters.

This advanced technology was developed and refined through years of diligent and investigative research by purification specialists and engineers. The Berkey filter flow rate has been perfectly calculated to yield the greatest volume of removal of viruses, toxic chemicals, bacteria, and other contaminants and pollutants.

SILVER SELF-STERILIZATION

Berkey filters are embedded with silver, which is a powerful anti-microbial, to act as a self-sterilizer for the Berkey elements. The microporous matrix and adsorption/absorption properties of the Berkey filters are highly effective at trapping bacteria, viruses, cysts, and parasites. To ensure these microbes are sterilized and do not stay permanently in the filters, silver is embedded in the filters.

This ensures the microbes are fully sterilized, keeping the Berkey filters clean and disinfected without the use of chemicals like iodine and chlorine.

This simple combination of methods of filtration that Berkey filters utilize allows for the most efficient and effective water purification on the market.
