Berkey Filters vs Reverse Osmosis
We often hear the question: "Why would I get a Berkey over a Reverse Osmosis (RO) water filter?" or "is a Berkey any better than Reverse Osmosis?"
First let's summarize how a RO filtration system works.
RO filtration involves the process of forcing water through a semi-permeable membrane using a high pressure system. By forcing the water through the semi-permeable membrane, just about everything is removed from the water and the result is water that is free from chemicals, bacteria, minerals, and other contaminants. While this is largely positive, water that is left with no minerals can have negative effects on the body with chronic usage.
Many beneficial minerals like potassium, calcium, iron, cobalt, manganese, among others, are completely removed.
This means you are drinking water with no minerals in it and therefore having the capacity to leech minerals from your body. The same effect can be seen when using RO water for cooking; the water can leech minerals from the vegetables and meat if you use it for cooking. A well balanced diet and/or mineral supplementation of the filtered water can balance out the mineral deficiency in the water.
The Alternative Option- Berkey
Berkey Water Filters are a great alternative option if you do not want to supplements your water with minerals, if on-going and up-front costs are a concern for you, or if you want a portable and easily movable filtration system that doesn't require power.
Black Berkey elements are beautifully designed filters that remove >99.99% of bacteria, parasites, viruses, heavy metals, pharmaceuticals and many other contaminants simply by using microscopic pores and ion exchange properties that attract harmful molecules. No power is required and only gravity is needed.
The most amazing aspect of Berkey filters is that they leave in the beneficial minerals so you don't have to supplement the water with anything. You simply fill your cup from the filter and have a refreshing drink.
Black Berkey elements have a lifespan of 3,000 gallons each, or 6,000 for a set of 2. On average, this equates to about 2 cents per gallon of water compared to RO systems which can cost anywhere from 20-30 cents per gallon.
Berkey Systems are cost-effective and simple methods of purifying your water. It requires no power, no supplementation, and is easily transported from place to place, not requiring any power or continued cost once it is installed and set up in your kitchen.
Simple, effective, efficient, and not to mention beautiful enough to be a piece of art in you home.
